The Gila Monster
is so non-confrontational that the state of
Arizona will fine YOU for being bitten. Contrary
to popular opinion their jaws do not lock.
They inject venom through grooves in their
teeth. To date no human fatality has been
confirmed due to this venomous lizard. |

gleason flats, river mile 20. Impress your
friends with the knowledge that manganese
is used in battery cells, as a paint pigment
and to keep steel from rusting. Asbestos and
uranium where also mined in the canyon until
the 1950's. |

Completely harmless the
gopher snake will often mimic a rattle snake
by making a rattling sound with its throat
and flattening its head to imitate the classic
diamond shape of a rattle snake. |

Apache horses have the
run of the land until they are gathered up
and rode bareback to round up the cattle grazing
on tribal lands. |

Coral snakes are not aggressive
and are very reclusive, count yourself lucky
to see one, but don't get bit as their neurotoxin
is quite powerful. |

Budding prickly pear will
produce edible red fruit in late spring. The
pads are also edible and quite good on the grill.

Walnut Creek is one of the
best hikes on the mult-day trips. Year round
side stream is filled with toads and there is
an abandoned uranium site to visit. |

Saguaros are the signature
cactus of the Sonoran Desert. The Hohokam fermented
the fruit to use in a ceremony to bring the
summer monsoons. |
